Bristol Survey
Goals: Research existing state survey forms. Develop a 'state or local' survey form. Test drive the form (completing 'field' as possible). Combine written, graphic and photographic documentaion.
Read
Ames, David L. "A
Primer on Architectural Photography and the Photo Documentation
of Historic Structures."
Research: Assess several state survey forms used as part of the SHPO 'survey and planning' work as per NHPA (PDF file, as amended through 2006), which indicates,
for SHPOS "in cooperation with Federal and State agencies, local governments, and private organizations and individuals, direct and conduct a comprehensive statewide survey of historic properties and maintain inventories of such properties;" and for CLGs "maintains a system for the survey and inventory of historic properties that furthers the purposes of subsection (b) of this section".
Consider the following resources, and others:
Base Survey Form - for preliminary application (PDF file), New Jersey and National Regsiters of Historic Places, New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, Division of Parks and Forestry, Department of Environmental Protection, State fo New Jersey.
Historic Sites:Survey Types, and Historic Property Users Manual (as 13.56 mb PDF file), Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, State of Washington. Lengthy, but worth the read. Focus on the illustrations of the list of 'fields' in the table of contents and illustrations of layouts. Your survey form (see below) may include fields for an 'intensive' survey, although not all the feilds will be able to be filled out.
Other state survey programs and resources may be located through NCSHPO.
Burns, Recording Historic Structures, chapter 5, Recording vernacular building forms.
Survey form: Develop your own survey form (in Word®, or equal). You can work with other students. Your form will include 'fields' that you will not be able to fill out but that would be needed for a state-level survey. Focus on the 'fields' needed over the graphic layout of the form.
Written: Develop a brief, one paragraph, written architectural description
of the exterior of several buildings along a Bristol street,
which you will be assigned. Consider the following resource:
Historical and Architectural Resources of Bristol, Rhode
Island. Providence, Rhode Island: Rhode Island Historical
Preservation Commission, 1990. (Available as 48 mb PDF file)
Photographs: Include two photographs, described
in Assignment 6 Photographic:
Survey.
Sketch: Include linear, freehand drawing of the 'footprint' of the building(s) and the property 'plot'.
Survey: Survey properties assigned. Complete survey forms as much as possible.
Product: Compile survey, including photgraphs, drawing, and written component in Word document. Export (convert) into a PDF files, one per building. Identify files with name in lower case as <ri_bristol_street_##_your-last-name.pdf>, where '##' is building number. For eample <ri_bristol_hope_500_marshall.pdf>. Include latitude and longtitude.
Panoramio: Upload and locate photographs of structures, identify by steeet address.
Delivery: To be determined.
